Cannon's re-election as Speaker was not certain. At the Republican caucus, he was re-nominated with 162 votes to 10 for Walter Smith and 8 scattering; his total was thus 33 less than a majority of the House [New York Times 3/14/1909].
However, Cannon agreed to some rules changes in exchange for the votes of some insurgent Republicans.
