City attorney of Bowling Green and Louisiana, Missouri, 1878-1881

Established his law practice in Bowling Green MO in 1880 and practiced there until his death

Presidential Elector (D-MO) 1880 and voted for Winfield S. Hancock for President

Married Genevieve Bennett in 1881; one son.

Pike County Prosecuting Attorney, 1885-1889

Missouri State House (D) 1889-1891

Delegate to the Trans-Mississippi Congress of 1891 and served as vic president

US House (D-MO) 1893-1895, 1897-1921. Defeated for re-election in 1894, 1920. Minority Leader 1907-1911 and 1919-1921.

Candidate for US President 1912, losing the Democratic nomination to Woodrow Wilson.
