In 1992 Glenda Jackson won the seat from the Conservatives, who had held it since 1974. Ms Jackson increased her majority to more than 13,000 in 1997 and retained the seat in 2001 and 2005, latterly with a majority of 3,729.

At the election, Hampstead and Kilburn is a cross-borough seat taking most of the wards from Hampstead and Highgate as well as some from Brent East and Brent South. It is made up of Brondesbury Park, Kilburn, Queens Park, Belsize Park, Fortune Green, Frognal and Fitzjohns, Hampstead Town, Kilburn, Swiss Cottage and West Hampstead. Highgate and Gospel Oak have gone to Holborn and St Pancras. The seat is losing Highgate and Primrose Hill, taking in Queen's Park. This affluent constituency has long been associated with millionaires, mansions and money. These can be found around Hampstead, but there are more socially mixed and deprived areas around Kilburn. It is home to many famous people.

There is a large Afro-Caribbean and Irish community in Brondesbury Park, Kilburn and Queen's Park.

Hampstead and Kilburn enjoys extremely good public services, with schools in high demand and many specialist health clinics at the Royal Free Hospital.
