Labour's Ron Brown held the seat throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, but moved to the SDP in 1981. Labour regained it in 1983.
Labour's Meg Hillier, a former London Assembly member, succeeded fellow journalist Brian Sedgemore in 2005, after he moved to the Liberal Democrats shortly before the election. She won a majority of 10,204, with a 9% swing to the Liberal Democrats.
At the election, Hackney South and Shoreditch will gain one part-ward from its northern neighbour Hackney North and Stoke Newington and lose two part-wards in the shape of Dalston and Leabridge. Hackney South and Shoreditch extends from the southern part of Hackney, up to its northern tip at Dalston, and down to Victoria Park and Shoreditch in the south.
A new Tube station, Shoreditch High Street, is scheduled to open in Shoreditch in 2010, at the northern end of the East London Line, with the link extending to Highbury and Islington in 2011, as part of the Overground line.
Shoreditch is now known for its trendy shops and bars, while also boasting a vibrant music and arts scene.

Affordable homes, business space and indoor sports facilities and green spaces are planned, all from Olympic funding.
