| Description |
The state legislature met to elect a Senator on February 4, 1839. Although Tallmadge received a majority of the overall votes in the legislature, he did not receive a majority of votes in the State Senate. The election of November 1839 changed the composition of the State Senate, and Tallmadge was reelected on January 14, 1840, and returned to the US Senate on January 27. He resigned on June 17, 1844, after being appointed Governor of Wisconsin Territory.
