Description |
Since Sen. Hitchcock only faced perennial candidate Robert Ross in the primary, the biggest story in the primary was the attempt by William Jennings Bryan to be elected a delegate to the national convention. He urged Republican women to cross over and vote in the Democratic primary, which annoyed Hitchcock [New York Times 4/16/1920]. Bryan was running as a "dry" Democrat for an At Large slot against a Hitchcock "wet" delegate candidate. Bryan was also opposed to the League of Nations [New York Times 4/17/1920]. Hitchcock was Wilson's floor leader in the Senate during the debate on the League, and he had opposed women's suffrage during when the amendment to the Constitution was being debated in the Senate [New York Times 4/19/1920]. On primary day, Bryan and an anti-Hitchcock candidate won two of the four At Large seats [New York Times 4/23/1920].
