Description |
Race for the congressional seat vacated by Bob Torricelli, who chose to run for US Senate rather than seek re-election.
The two nominees were Democrat Steven Rothman, a Surrogate Court Judge, and Republican Bergen County Clerk Kathleen Donovan. Both had very similar stands on the issues -- both were pro-choice, both were pro-environment...though Rothman did stand out as the more liberal candidate (he did not support welfare reform, for example).
Kathleen Donovan wound up winning most the endorsements: The Star-Ledger, The Record, The Herald and News, and the Sierra Club, but Steve Rothman wound up winning most of the votes. 1996 was not a Republican year in New Jersey, and the 9th District is the third most Democratic in the state. Rothman wound up carrying the district by nearly thirty thousand votes.
