Info | A lifelong New Jerseyan born in Paterson on August 26, 1951, Bob was taught the value of serving others by his mother, a school librarian and his father, an attorney. His love of politics and history was fueled by the countless hours spent in his mother's school library.
As a teenager, Bob saw firsthand the inhumane reality of segregation when his mother brought him to rural Georgia and educated him on the world beyond our borders with a trip to the holy city of Jerusalem. Bob said, "In my house, a person of value was measured by what they did for other people."
His political career officially began when Bob was elected Class President for his junior and senior years at Rutgers University. (His freespending campaign led the Rutgers College Governing Association to create their own set campaign finance laws.) As a student, Bob worked on Governor Brendan Byrne?s successful 1973 campaign and later served as the Governor's Deputy Legislative counsel. Bob earned his law degree from Rutgers School of Law while working full-time for Governor Byrne and later went on to receive his Masters degree in Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 1980. During the Carter Administration, Bob went to Washington and served as a counsel to Vice-President Walter Mondale.
A desire to serve the people of New Jersey brought Bob Torricelli back to his home state in 1982, where at the age of 31 he was elected to Congress. Bob represented the 9th Congressional District for fourteen years, gaining a reputation as a hard working advocate for working families, quality health care and better public education. As a member of the House International Relations Committee and later the Senate Foreign Relation Committee, Bob has broadened his expertise in foreign policy by traveling around the world and building relationships with foreign leaders.
