Description For many years Chorley was an important marginal seat that changed hands when the government did. It was Tory in 1970, Labour in 1974, and Tory again from 1979 to 1997. But Den Dover's reign was brought to an end in 1997 by Lindsay Hoyle, son of former Warrington North MP Doug, who won by a margin of almost 10,000 votes. Chorley's historic marginality was the product of its finely balanced make-up. The town of Chorley is industrial in nature and largely Labour-supporting, particularly in the south and east districts. The satellite areas of Euxton, Withnell, Lostock, Eccleston, Heskin, Clayton-le-Woods and Whittle-le-Woods are mainly but not entirely Tory. Chorley has been a market town for more than 500 years. The seat has many fine parks and gardens, moors and woodlands and stately buildings including Astley Hall and Houghton Tower. The town is also known for its cakes which date back to medieval times. Lindsay Hoyle actually slightly increased his majority in percentage terms between 1997 and 2001.
