The Democratic Eighth Congressional District convention assembled in New Bern on 5/17/1849. It first passed a resolution stating that it would nominate only a candidate for the U.S. House who was opposed to the Wilmot Proviso. William K. Lane of Wayne County was nominated by acclamation (Raleigh Standard, 5/30/1849).
The Whig convention was held in Washington NC on 5/24/1849. It nominated James W. Bryan of Craven County, but within a few days Bryan withdrew as a result of ill health.
The Whig convention re-assembled at Washington on 6/19/1849, and it chose Edward Stanly as its replacement nominee.
The Whig press in North Carolina unanimously hailed the Stanly nomination. The main issue was the Wilmot Proviso. Lane argued that it was unconstitutional. Stanly argued that while he opposed it in general, he believed that Congress did have the authority to pass legislation regarding the territories.
The canvass became quite heated, resulting in a very high turnout. Stanly won a narrow victory.
