Democratic nomination
The Democratic district convention met on 8/12. Branch was nominated with a bare majority on the first ballot: Branch - 171.35; W.P. Roberts - 121.65; W.P. Shaw - 26; Wilson H. Lucas - 19; T.G. Skinner (wi*) - 1.25 (Elizabeth City Falcon, 8/15/1890).
Republican nomination
Bernard was placed in nomination by the Republican district executive committee around 8/27/1890, without the call for a district convention (Wilmington Morning Star, 8/29/1890).
Prohibition nomination
The Prohibition Party in Beaufort County called other counties to send people to attend its executive committee around 9/15/1890. A full county ticket was nominated, and Jarvis was chosen to run for the US House (Washington Progress, 9/16/1890).
