Description |
Several of the non-Democratic candidates in 1859 ran on an Independent Democratic ticket. With the demise of the American Party in North Carolina, no organized party had yet emerged. The success of the IDs in 1859 energized the opposition, which re-organized the Whig Party in NC.
Democratic nomination
The Democratic district convention met in Edenton on 5/26/1859. The delegates nominated Shaw for another term by acclamation (Williamston Mercury, 6/1/1859).
