Description |
Republicans were playing defense in this traditionally Republican seat where newly elected Sen. Scott Brown was engaged in a heated rematch with Democrat Angus McQuilken.
Republicans picked up this seat earlier in the year in a special election despite it being scheduled the same day as the Democratic presidential primary.
Scott Brown's election represented the power of Mitt Romney's popularity (at the time) and sparked a short-lived reinvigoration of the Massachusetts Republican Party. Losing this seat would have been a disastrous and humiliating blow to the GOP. The party had put much emphasis on the symbolism of the special election pick up.
Polling on both sides indicated this race would be tight, but Democrats still had an uphill climb -- special election re-matches in Massachusetts hardly ever favor the challenger.
When the dust cleared, Scott Brown had won re-election keeping Massachusetts's pro-incumbent streak alive: no incumbent State Senator has lost since 1994; and no incumbent Republican has lost since 1992.
