From MD State Archives: In the summer of 1861, the Union Party after its formation named Bradford as its candidate for governor. To oppose him, the Democrats nominated General Benjamin C. Howard. In the fall election, Bradford defeated Howard by approximately 30,000 votes, undoubtedly because of voter intimidation as well as the unlawful use of troops.
