Description |
"In November 1993, after years of debate and study, the residents of Staten Island voted to secede from New York City, with 65% of voters voicing their approval. The move toward secession was the result of Staten Islands growing dissatisfaction with the way the city handled such issues as land development, high transit fares, and the continued use of the Fresh Kills landfill long after it was supposed to close. Despite the residents two-to-one vote in favor of secession, the New York State Legislature squelched the plan. Since then, Fresh Kills has closed, charges for the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the Staten Island Ferry have decreased, and the movement toward secession has died down."
Cynthia Blair
Staten Island secession must be approved by the state legislature and signed by the governor--this was not done.
