Description |
Withdrew from the Conservative Caucus after he announced a run for a Seat in the North Ireland Assembly (Stormont) in the 2003 elections. Hunter was a candidate for the Democratic Unionist Party in those elections. Due to Conservative Party rules, he needed to sit as an Independent Conservative.
"Mr Hunter, who was elected to Westminster in 1983, is to become an independent Conservative for the remainder of this parliament, as under the Tory constitution he would be unable to stand for Stormont."
