Description | One of two dominant parties in Malta. Party was founded as the Partito Nazionale by Maltese aristocrat and constitutional attorney Fortunato Mizzi in 1883. Party's main focus since its foundation was to institute progressive constitutional changes for the country. Party then became the Partito Anti-Riformista to petition for a constitution which was eventually written in 1887. The Partito Nazionale (PN) was re-constituted upon merger of the Maltese Political Union with the Democratic Nationalist Party in 1926. Party has been led by Bernard Grech since October 3, 2020, who also became leader of the opposition on October 7, 2020. The PN's historic defeat after elections held on March 26, 2022, automatically triggered a leadership race, jeopardizing Grech's position. |
