Description | Muslim-minority interests faction of the ruling CNDD–FDD formed into a political party in August 2002 by faction leader and former president of the CNDD–FDD (until 2007) Hussein Radjabu. Radjabu, a Hutu military strategist and leader of the armed rebel group Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD) during the Burundian civil war, was condemned for brutality and authoritarianist tendencies. Ruling class and CNDD-FDD party embarrassment over these revelations brought about a break between Radjabu and Burundi's newly elected President and dictator Pierre Nkurunziza (ruled between August 26, 2005 to June 8, 2020) in February 2007. Radjabu was dismissed from his leadership post at the CNDD-FDD and imprisoned. Escaping from prison in 2015, he turned his new party into a virulent regime critic and target of regime violence, which included assassinations of UPD party leaders [Union for Peace and Democracy–Zigamibanga [Union pour la paix et la démocratie –Zigamibanga (UPD)]. |
