Description | Center-left, populist party founded and chaired by Megawati Sukarnoputri, Indonesia's 5th president from 2001 to 2004, and daughter of Sukarno. The PDI-P nominated for president in 2014 Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who succeeded in becoming Indonesia's 7th President (assuming office on October 20, 2014). Party split from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), dissolved on January 10, 2003, which was one of only two state-approved parties during Suharto's New Order era. The PDI-P is a keen supporter and proponent of Pancasila, Indonesia's official philosophy (invented/promulgated by Megawati's father, Sukarno), and considers itself the successor of the defunct PDI [Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P)]. |
