| Description | Union of eight major and minor parties formed in an attempt to unify a fracturing political system in Ethiopia and support its Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed. Parties in the union include the long-time dominant Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP), the Somali Democratic Party (SDP), the Harari National League (HNL), the Benishangul Gumuz People’s Democratic Party (BGPDP), the Gambella People’s Unity Democratic Movement (GPUDM), the Amhara Democratic Party (ADP) and the South Peoples Democratic Movement (SPDM) [Link] The merger faced opposition from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which went its own way and successfully set up in 2021 the separatist National Regional State of Tigray led by the TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael.The PP supports the interests of Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, the Oromo, who represent 34.5% of the country. |
