Coalition of four ethnic-based parties led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front. Coalition took control of government in May 1991 and formed what it called a "democratic republic" based on ethnic federalism. The party has dominated political life in Ethiopia ever since, using autocratic methods to maintain its power.
In spite of the party's calls for ethnic federalism, coalition rank and file profess an ethnic chauvinism which believes that the only true "Abyssinian people" (a/k/a, the 'Habesha' people or 'Ethiopians') are the Amharas and the Tigrayans (excluding close to dozen other peoples living in Ethiopia proper).
In November 22, 2019, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia unified the constituent parties of the coalition into the new Prosperity Party. The EPRDF was dissolved in anticipation of this act.
