Description | Center-right party led by entrepreneur Roberto Arzú. Arzú co-ran with his father (Álvaro Arzú) the National Advancement Party (PAN), then joined his father and brother to launch the Unionist Party after Álvaro had a run-in with PAN executives. Podemos began in 1995 as the Guatemalan Labor Party (PLG) which dissolved itself in 2002 after years of failing to stir interest. The PLG machinery was revived and name rebranded on August 3, 2002 as the Reform Movement (MR), until it dissolved itself on June 12, 2018. Roberto Arzú took over the MR team and renamed the party Podemos (We Can) on June 12, 2018, chosing to hold on to the traditional colors of red and blue of the previous parties. Arzú then became its nominee for president in 2019. Party was forced to dissolve by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on January 8, 2024, joining 10 other political parties that did not reach a minimum number of votes in the June 25, 2023 General Elections. |
