Description | Center-right pro-China party formed by merger of the Maurin Kiribati and United Coalition parties. Party won 19 seats in the 44-member House of Assembly in 2016's legislative elections and took the presidency on March 11, 2016. Party is led by Taneti Maamau, Kiribati's 6th President. Party chairman, Banuera Berina, departed on November 3, 2019 over President Maamau's decision to switch diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China, launching the rival Boutokaan Kiribati Moa Party (BKM) the next day. The BKM picked up a surprising 13 House seats in the 2020 legislative elections (the TKP took 18). Talks between the opposition Kiribiti Moa and Pillars of Truth parties led to a formidable merged party on May 22, 2020, which together meant a combined 22 seats in the 46-seat House of Assembly. This forced a reshuffle in the TKP's leadership, with MP and entrepreneur Tekeeua Tarati elected chairman on May 2020 [Tobwaan Kiribati Party translated as "Embracing" Kiribati Party; TKP]. |
