Center-left party founded by Montenegro's first President, former Communist Party leader and founder of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) Momir Bulatović. Bulatović broke from the DPS in 1998 after losing a leadership fight to his deputy, oft-time Montenegro president and prime minister Milo Đukanović. Party began as the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro — Momir Bulatović, a nostalgic effort by Bulatović to hold on to the party he had founded. Bulatović's moodiness and bitterness since the split in 1998 continued to wreak havoc within his new party, and he suddenly resigned as president of the SNP in January 2001. The departure caused an internal rupture between the right-of-center and left-of-center wings within the SNP, with the left wing splitting to form the People's Socialist Party of Montenegro (NSSCG; party disbanded in 2009). Unceasing internal squabbling would bring about the SNP's fall from Montenegro's largest opposition party with 19 parliamentary seats in 2001 to five as of January 2023. Party has been led by former Montenegro Vice President Vladimir Joković since August 13, 2017 [Socijalistička narodna partija Crne Gore (SNP)]
