Description | Centrist party established by associates of Hutu President and dictator Juvénal Habyarimana (assassinated in 1994; said to have been on orders from Rwandan Patriotic Front leader Paul Kagame, Rwanda's current Tutsi president) after the liberalization of 1990. An anti-regime faction of the party developed in 1992 and joined the Tutsi RFP led by Paul Kagame at the tail-end of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. Party program favors an end to subsistence agriculture in favor of a modern agri-food industry. Party also supports limiting the number of children per family to three. Party has been led by former Senate Vice President and 2010 presidential candidate Prosper Higiro since 2001. Party holds four seats in the 80-seat Chamber of Deputies [Parti Libéral (PL)]. |
