Description | Anti-colonialist, absolutist party formed by soldiers behind what was called the 1994 Gambian coup d'état led by future president Yahya Jammeh. Jammeh ousted the Gambia's first president, Dawda Jawara, and ran The Gambia dictatorially from November 6, 1996 to January 19, 2017. Party adhered to the North Korean ideology of Juche, which held that all power should emanate from a center for the benefit of the mass. Jammeh was forced into exile after being overthrown in 2017. His party still operates, holding five seats in the National Assembly. Jammeh formed a political alliance on September 19, 2021 with his successor, The Gambia's president, Adama Barrow, bringing together the APRC with Barrow's NPP, forming the APRC-NPP alliance. Jammeh dissolved the APRC from his exile base of Equatorial Guinea on October 18, 2021, though not without controversy [Link] The APRC has been led by Fabakary Jatta since January 21, 2017. |
