Spanish Congress Votes 219-131 Against Pedro Sánchez As New PM In Second Vote

| Description | The Spanish Congress voted 219-131, with no abstentions, against Spanish Socialist Party leader Pedro Sánchez becoming the new Prime Minister of Spain in a second-round confidence vote on Friday evening.
On Wednesday evening, MPs voted 219-130 against Mr. Sánchez's appointment, with one abstention.
This is the first time a candidate for Prime Minister of Spain has failed to receive the confidence of the house since the death of Franco.
During Friday's brief debate, parties took turns to criticise each other's positions during the debate and preceding weeks of negotiations.
Mr. Sánchez defended his effort, as he had done earlier in the week, saying: "My only failure would have been to reject the head of state's offer".
"You are going to vote against these 200 improvements", he said to Podemos MPs: "but we all know most of you agree with these measures", ending with a question: "Do we want to prevent Mariano Rajoy from continuing as the head of government or not?".
Albert Rivera, for Ciudadanos, raised eyebrows when he said "It is a shame Mr. Rajoy will vote today with Bildu and Esquerra, but's that's where we are" and said he wished Podemos "were more like the Spanish Communist Party", in allusion to the latter's greater values and principles compared to Mr. Iglesias's party. |
