Description | Accused of selling his office, Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez pleaded not guilty Thursday to 24 felony charges, including accepting $185,000 in bribes to lower some of his campaign contributors' property taxes.
Tax consultant Ramin Salari of Encino also pleaded not guilty to the alleged scam that prosecutors said deprived Los Angeles County of at least $1.16 million in tax revenue.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Shelly Torrealba refused defense requests Thursday to lower the bail for both men, calling the allegations "an extreme abuse of public trust."
Bail was set at $1.38 million for Noguez and $1.36 million for Salari, though Torrealba said she would continue to consider a smaller amount. |
