Description | New Democrat MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau’s surprise victory in Berthier-Maskinongé is being challenged by the defeated Liberal candidate, who unveiled new allegations of irregularities Friday.
Francine Gaudet said a formal complaint has been made with Elections Canada by a voter in the riding alleging there are at least 90 invalid signatures on the elected NDP candidate's nomination papers.
Ms. Gaudet explained in an interview that when voters were asked to endorse the NDP candidate’s nomination papers, her name did not appear on the voter consent nomination form. The law requires that each candidate obtain the consent of 100 voters in the riding in order to be eligible to run as a candidate in the riding.
When the documents were submitted to the local returning officer, Jean Provencher, he noticed the blank space where Ms. Brosseau's name should have appeared and filled it in himself in order to properly identify the document, according to Ms. Gaudet. She said that this latest incident was further proof that the nomination papers were invalid. |
