Description | Rocco Rossi quit the Toronto mayor’s race after a poll showed his meagre support collapsing and George Smitherman moving into a dead heat with Rob Ford.
Rossi, who had repeatedly insisted he would stay in the race until the Oct. 25 election, made the announcement at a news conference at his campaign headquarters Wednesday.
“I am announcing tonight that I am withdrawing from the mayor’s race immediately,” Rossi said, flanked by his wife Rhonnie, mother Domenica, father Domenico and campaign manager Bernie Morton. Campaign volunteers and staff crowded his office.
Rossi did not endorse another candidate.
His dramatic exit comes two weeks after Sarah Thomson, who usually was at the bottom of the polls with Rossi, also quit. She urged her supporters to back Smitherman, saying only he can stop Ford from “ripping up” Toronto with deep cuts to city spending. |
