Description | A New Brunswick MLA has been named to the Senate.
Rose-May Poirier, the Tory MLA for Rogersville-Kouchibouguac, was one of five appointments Friday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, giving the Conservatives a majority inside the Senate.
Poirier was fielding congratulatory phone calls and emails Friday after her appointment became official.
"It's a privilege to be able to move to another level," she said.
Unlike the four other senate appointments that became effective immediately, Poirier's appointment won't come into effect until Feb. 28.
"The reason that decision was made was so we weren't bringing any unnecessary expenses to the taxpayers of New Brunswick by making the appointment official immediately," said Poirier, explaining that a byelection would have been forced within six months if she left right away from the provincial legislature. |
