Description | Back to square one for the Kansas Democrats. Again.
Kansas state Sen. Laura Kelly, a Topeka Democrat, announced this morning that she's dropping her effort to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins as Kansas' 2nd district representative in Congress.
Kelly said she wants to "keep her commitment to her constituents" and focus on the difficult work that lies ahead when state lawmakers reconvene in two weeks.
Kelly serves on the Senate Ways & Means Committee, a panel that will be busy as lawmakers look to erase another widening budget gap.
"As the financial condition of this state has worsened, it has become clear that there are not enough hours in the day or days in the week to make it possible for me to fulfill my duties as a state senator who is the ranking member of the Senate's budget committee and be a fulltime candidate for Congress," she wrote in an email to reporters. "... My first duty is to the state and those who elected me."
Kelly, the only Democrat in the race, was hoping to unseat U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, a Topeka Republican. |
