DescriptionMaricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas is eyeing a run for Arizona Attorney General next year.

Thomas said Wednesday he is setting up an exploratory committee and plans to file election paperwork with the state. Thomas, a Republican, was elected county attorney in 2004 and 2008. He lost the 2002 attorney general’s race to Terry Goddard. Goddard, a Democrat, is expected to run for governor next year.

Thomas is an ally of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his get-tough approach to illegal immigration. Arpaio, also considering a run for governor, said he backs Thomas’ possible run for AG.
