Description | Voters will return to the polls on Nov. 18th for a special election to elect a governor because none of the four candidates received the required 50 percent plus one vote to win outright in the general election.
In the governor’s race, 12,188 ballots were cast and incumbent Gov. Togiola T.A. Tulafono received 5,036 votes (41.3 percent) followed by Utu Abe Malae with 3,825 votes (31.4 percent), Afoa Moega Lutu with 3,262 votes (26.8 percent) and Tuika Tuika with 65 votes (0.5 percent).
Tulafono last night told supporters not to be saddened with the outcome of the general election adding that they have been through a run-off before and it’s nothing new to them. The governor was referring to the 2004 general election during which he faced Afoa in a run-off vote.
Utu said he is thankful for the chance given by voters, adding that the other candidates did well in the polls.
Afoa and Tuika offered no comments Tuesday night.
