DescriptionYou could hear the generational shift overtaking the Democratic Party on Saturday. 1,725 delegates at the Democratic State Convention turned to three young candidates as their first choices for the three open U.S. House seats in New Mexico.

Boomers born from 1943 to 1960 took over the U.S. House in 1994. Xers born from 1961 to 1979 will probably take over the U.S. House either in 2010 or 2012.

Look at the three winners today and you'll see where our country is heading. Martin Heinrich, Ben Ray Lujan, and Bill McCamley embody the future of the Democratic Party, and so, at least for the short-term, they embody the future of America. It's great to see them succeeding.

In District 2 down south, Bill McCamley, 29, is a Dona Ana County Commissioner. Calling McCamley passionate would be the understatement of this election. During his 5 minutes at the podium he made the convention feel like a WWF finale. And McCamley declares in a youtube video aimed at voters 18 to 35, "It's time for our generation to really step up to the plate."

In District 3 up north, Ben Ray Lujan, 35, is a PRC Commissioner who generated the most positive energy at the convention of any candidate for any office, by far. Lujan himself exudes positive energy and watching him for a few minutes you can't help but start rooting for him to succeed.

In District 1 here in the Albuquerque metro area, Martin Heinrich, 36, a former Albuquerque City Councilor, embodies the pragmatism of Gen X. Heinrich has a logical and analytical mind, and he is almost always calm, cool, and collected. Heinrich also knows how to work with fellow legislators across party lines to get things done.
