DescriptionIllustrating the Democrats' huge cash advantage this campaign season, Skip Cimino has narrowed Sen. Peter Inverso's lead by outspending the incumbent Republican more than 4 to 1, according to financial reports filed Monday.

The two men, both from Hamilton, are squaring off for the 14th District Senate seat in one of five contests that will determine the balance of power in the Senate, where each party has 20 seats. The district covers Hamilton, West Windsor and southern Middlesex County.

Cimino has raised $687,000 and spent $655,000, while Inverso has raised $235,000 and spent $147,000. The joint Democratic legislative committee Cimino shares with Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein and Assemblyman Gary Guear raised another $133,000 and spent $129,000.

As of Monday, however, Inverso had more money in the bank, $57,500 to $30,000.

Cimino's edge was not unexpected. With James E. McGreevey in the governor's office, Democrats have dominated political fund raising. Contrary to tradition, Cimino is among several Democratic challengers with a financial advantage.
