Description | Kentucky Attorney General Greg Stumbo, a Democrat, filed papers yesterday allowing him to raise and spend money to evaluate whether he should challenge U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2008.
"I am keeping my options open. I am excited about gathering the facts and doing the ground work on this important election," Stumbo said in an e-mail sent to reporters. "It is time we remind Mitch McConnell that he represents Kentucky not George Bush."
Stumbo, who has talked publicly about his interest in the Senate race in recent weeks, said he decided to form a federal exploratory committee with the Federal Election Commission after watching McConnell lead Republicans in an effort to block an up or down vote related to the Iraq War last week.
"The American people deserve better, the families of Kentucky deserve better, most of all, our troops deserve better," Stumbo's statement said.
The move comes nine weeks after Stumbo ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in the Democratic primary on a slate with Louisville businessman Bruce Lunsford. Lunsford has been mentioned as a possible Senate candidate but has said since the May 22 primary that he is committed to helping Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Beshear win in November.
Stumbo said he doesn't want to interfere with fund-raising efforts for Beshear and other statewide offices. However, he will proceed to raise money from out-of-state donors or family and friends before the Nov. 6 election.
"With McConnell's overwhelming war chest, we must start now," he said.
McConnell's re-election campaign has $5.7 million in the bank heading into next year's election -- more than the $4.3 million the National Republican Senatorial Committee reported having.
Despite his fund-raising success, McConnell has been under heavy attack in recent weeks from national Democratic groups, who have run TV ads in Kentucky lambasting his support of President Bush's Iraq war policy.
