DescriptionVoters will have to wait until November to choose among the candidates for the Columbus school board after five — including incumbent W. Shawna Gibbs — were disqualified from running.

With 12 candidates, a primary would have been necessary to cut the field to eight people running for four full-term seats. Now, seven candidates remain.

Gibbs, 33, is appealing her disqualification, but the other four disqualified candidates aren't, said Ben Piscitelli, spokesman for the Franklin County Board of Elections. Gibbs' appeal will be decided next week.

Gibbs was disqualified because she submitted her paperwork for the election under a different name than the one she used for her voter registration. She said that she rarely uses her full name — Weirdella LaRay Shawna Maria Gibbs — and submitted the candidacy forms under the signature she typically uses, W. Shawna Gibbs.
