The ultra-crowded Dallas mayoral race is also a highly competitive one, with several candidates boasting six-figure sums in their campaign accounts, according to mandatory finance reports released Tuesday night by City Hall.
At least two recent additions to the race have notable political careers and sizable support bases, prompting local political analysts to give at least eight or nine candidates a legitimate shot at winning Dallas' top elected position in May.
In all, 18 Dallasites – some widely known, some known to virtually no one – have registered mayoral campaign treasurers, allowing them to raise money.
"It's intriguing that there are so many viable candidates still in the race," said Matthew Wilson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University. "It may be a few months until we're able to see which of these campaigns are really taking off, and which ones are not." |
