Description | The phone went silent when Andrew Ginther learned yesterday that the Columbus school board’s choice to be its newest member had a 9-year-old conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The silence continued for about 10 seconds until Ginther, a board member, mustered, "Wow."
W. Shawna Gibbs, whom the board named Thursday as its pick to replace Karen Schwarzwalder, pleaded no contest to the charge after driving down a closed street at 3 a.m. in July 1997. Franklin County court records list the conviction under her given name, Weirdella Laray Gibbs.
She spent three days in the Maryhaven Exploring Sober Alternatives program instead of going to jail. Her driver’s license was suspended for six months, with an exception for workrelated trips.
Board members said yesterday that they didn’t know about the conviction but stood behind Gibbs. |
