The latest candidate to throw her hat into the Columbus Board of Education ring is activist Bernadine Kennedy Kent of the Far East Side.
Eight people are seeking to secure four seats on the school board in the Nov. 4 general election.
Terms start Jan. 1.
Kent, of 3148 Oak Spring St., is a former assistant principal who retired from the Columbus school district and now heads a private parent advisory business, Parent Advocates for Students in School.
She is among a handful of people who challenge district policies during the public comment section at most school board meetings.
A lawsuit Kent filed against the district is pending in U.S. District Court. It alleges race and gender employment discrimination, and it claims the district is retaliating against her for trying to help handicapped students.
The district denies all charges, court records show.
Kent is the second of two candidates to have an active lawsuit against the school district.
IncumbentBill Moss, 1640 Franklin Ave., is seeking his sixth nonconsecutive term. He is an announcer at WSMZ Radio.
Moss is the lead plaintiff in a class action discrimination lawsuit against the district that is now pending before the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. The lower U.S. District Court had dismissed the case.
The school system denies the charge.
