"The Oklahoma jurist will become the first black judge to serve on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate on Tuesday easily confirmed the nomination of Jerome Holmes of Oklahoma to be the first black judge to serve on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
After several hours of debate over two days, the vote was 67 to 30.
Key Democrats had forced the debate to express their opposition sparked by Holmes' published articles against affirmative action and on other issues such as jury bias and the death penalty.
In the end, 12 Democrats joined 54 Republicans and one independent in supporting the nomination.
"I am very gratified by the vote of the United States Senate," Holmes, 44, said in a prepared statement released by an Oklahoma City public relations firm." |
