MONTGOMERY -- Less than two weeks before the scheduled start of former Gov. Don Siegelman's federal corruption trial and six weeks before the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley maintains a tight lead over her embattled opponent, the results of a new statewide survey suggest.

The Press-Register/University of South Alabama poll of likely Democratic primary voters showed Baxley with 39 percent support. Siegelman, who lost his re-election attempt in 2002 to Republican Bob Riley, had 34 percent. Twenty-seven percent were undecided.

The two candidates headline the Democratic field in the June 6 primary. The nominee will face the winner of the Republican primary, which features Riley and ousted Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore.

The poll, conducted April 15-20, includes responses from 408 Alabama voters who said they were likely to cast a Democratic ballot on June 6. The results carry a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
