DescriptionOmaha Mayor Mike Fahey might put his name back on the ballot after all.

"The more I look at possible projects coming on board, the more I'd be inclined, if a few things happen, to consider seeking a third term," Fahey told The World-Herald Tuesday.

That's a shift from the attitude Fahey espoused last May as he wrapped up his successful re-election campaign.

Fahey said at that time: "I'm pretty sure this is my last campaign. You never say never, but that's my feeling as of right now. In my own mind, I've determined to term-limit myself."

Omaha city officials are not restricted in the number of times they can seek re-election.

Simply by finishing out his current term, Fahey would be in office eight years and become the longest-serving modern mayor of Omaha.

The assumption in Omaha's business and political circles had been that the 62-year-old Fahey would complete his second term and leave politics. Councilmen Jim Vokal and Jim Suttle had begun jockeying for position as his successor. Another political comeback by former Mayor Hal Daub was being talked about in luncheon conversations.

"I did not absolutely close the door on it," Fahey said Tuesday about his previous comments on a third term. "There are possibilities that could cause me to reconsider."
