Description | HARTFORD — Lowell P. Weicker Jr. emerged from 11 years of political retirement on Monday to say that U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman's hawkish stance on Iraq should trigger a Democratic primary next year.
And if Democrats don't rise against Lieberman, the 74-year-old Weicker said he would run as an independent, focusing his campaign against the war and Lieberman's support for it.
A national political observer said it would be a long-shot campaign — a sentiment echoed by Weicker himself.
The former governor, who lost his Republican U.S. Senate seat to Lieberman in 1988, said the war in Iraq is damaging the nation's standing in the world and destroying its self-esteem. |
