Description | It’s impossible not to be a pessimist looking at federal politics. Ottawa is a mess, it’s only going to get messier, and there’s no hope of things getting any better in the foreseeable future.
Blame Jean Chretien and Preston Manning.
Blame Chretien for the sponsorgate scandal that’s made the Liberal party unworthy of support. Sure, Justice John Gomery found no evidence that Chretien personally knew about the kickback scam that funnelled taxpayers’ money to the party’s Quebec wing, and he absolved Prime Minister Paul Martin of any misconduct. But if your bank embezzled your money, even if the bank’s CEO wasn’t involved, you’d still switch banks, wouldn’t you?
At the very least, Chretien is directly responsible for a foolish scheme that was supposed to strengthen federalism in Quebec, but which has instead pushed more Quebecers into the separatists’ embrace.
Blame Manning for fracturing the right wing of the political spectrum so badly that 15 years later, the reconstituted Reform-Alliance-no-longer-Progressive-but-much-more-Conservative Party still can’t inspire enough public confidence to be a reasonable alternative to form government. The Liberals couldn’t have prayed for a better ally than Manning to ensure their unending rule. My fellow Canadians, we’re doomed. |
