Description | Former Gov. Jane Dee Hull, 70, served 15 years in the Arizona Legislature, part of that as House speaker, before being elected Secretary of State and ascending to the state's highest office upon former Gov. Fife Symington's resignation in 1997. Hull was elected to a full term as governor in 1998, but declined to run again and left office in January 2003.
She co-chaired President Bush's 2000 campaign in Arizona and was honorary co-chair of his re-election effort in Arizona last year. In mid-2004, she was nominated by Bush to be a U.S. delegate to the U. N. General Assembly, a post she held until earlier this year. Hull recently returned from her summer retreat in Pinetop to Phoenix, where 'Arizona Republic' reporter Pat Flannery caught up with her by telephone to discuss life after the Governor's Office, her foray into global politics and her take on Arizona's political future.
Question: Are you staying active in politics these days, and if so, how?
Answer: I'm really not. I'm involved in some Republican women's clubs, and we did some fund-raising for (Republican Sen.) Jon Kyl this summer, but I'm really not too involved. |
