DescriptionAs Adrienne Clarkson's anticipated departure from the office of Governor General fast approaches, there is speculation her successor will hail from Quebec.

According to a report in The Globe and Mail Wednesday, Prime Minister Paul Martin is weighing several candidates from the province where the popularity of his Liberal minority is trailing far behind the Bloc Quebecois.

Among the high-profile women Martin is said to be considering are Quebec Lieutenant-Governor Lise Thibeault, and Monique Mercure, the former director general of the National Theatre School.

Retired Supreme Court of Canada judge Claire L'Heureux-Dubé, lawyer Paule Gauthier and businesswoman Guylaine Saucier are also among the names The Globe suggests are under consideration.
