Description | Mike Wiles, a South High School alumnus and a longtime South Side activist, said he will work to increase accessibility to the Columbus Public Schools Board of Education, if he is elected to the board next fall.
Wiles, one of seven candidates running in the May 3 primary election, said he feels that current board members don't understand what the public wants from its schools, and he plans to create Community Advisory Panels to provide input.
The CAPS, as he calls them, would be organized according to the district's six planning areas, and would include representation from every school and from business and community organizations in each area.
Wiles earlier formed the Southside Education Committee, which operated in a similar fashion and was linked to the school board's now-defunct public relations committee. Although the panel died out, Wiles is convinced the concept is sound and will provide a greater voice for residents.
