DescriptionThe lesbian and gay rights group EGALE (Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere) today demanded that Prime Minister Jean Chrétien clarify the Government’s position on upcoming amendments to the Canadian Human Rights Act.

“We are appalled at the ignorant and bigoted comments from a few Liberal backbenchers such as Roseanne Skoke and Tom Wappel,” said John Fisher, Executive Director of EGALE. “We are equally appalled that there has been no effective response from the Prime Minister. M. Chrétien has a responsibility to denounce Ms. Skoke’s comments and make it clear that there is no room for hatred and prejudice within the Liberal Party and within the House of Commons.”

Carmen Paquette, Co-ordinator of the Ottawa-Carleton Campaign for Equal Families, agrees. “I’m sure M. Chrétien would not allow such statements to be made about francophone or visible minority Canadians. Ms. Skoke has shown she is out of touch with the views of Canadians. Recent opinion polls show that the vast majority of Canadians support amendments to the Human Rights Act to protect lesbians and gays from discrimination, and more people support relationship benefits for same-sex couples than oppose them.”

EGALE and the Campaign for Equal Families commended Bloc M.P. Réal Ménard for his integrity in publicly challenging Ms. Skoke as a gay man. “Canadians need to be aware that lesbians and gays are in all walks of life, including amongst our elected representatives.” said Fisher. Paquette added: “It is tremendously important that we have individuals such as M. Ménard and Mr. Robinson who are able to draw upon their experiences as gay men to tell Ms. Skoke how hateful and hurtful her comments are.”
